It’s no secret that Ian Somerhalder is one of the sweetest actors out there. He posts inspirational content on a daily basis, raises awareness on important causes, and is wonderful to his fans. However, even the most compassionate stars sometimes need a break from all the lights, camera, and action — and so, when the 36-year-old actor and his wife, Nikki Reed, exited their hotel in Paris on Thursday, May 27, and encountered a crowd of admirers desperate for a pic and autograph, Ian had no choice but to make an official announcement.

After participating in the “Bite Me: I’m Famous” convention and greeting fans before and after the event, he simply needed a break. While the 27-year-old Twilight actress stood quietly behind him, Ian clasped his hands together and implored everyone, in the nicest way possible, to grant the newlyweds one day of peace and quiet.

“No, no, no. Hey, listen. Just stop. Everybody, listen. I love you guys. I’m not taking a single photo today,” he explained, stressing that he appreciates their support but needs some time off. “It’s my day. Don’t follow us, please. I love you guys. You’re so good to us. You’re so awesome.”

So why is the media making a huge deal over Ian’s refusal to pose for pics? Why are people bashing him over this rare incident when he constantly showers his devotees with hugs and attention?

Even though Ian kept calm during his speech and was clearly conflicted by his decision, one girl was overwhelmed with emotion when she realized she wouldn’t get to meet her idol. “Just one. One, please,” she pleaded with him, but Ian wouldn’t budge. He gently pointed out, “It’s not just one.” (Let’s be real: If he snapped a selfie with her, he’d have to take one with all the bystanders.) Unfortunately, this was not the response the girl was hoping for, and she burst into tears.

Though the clip uploaded to YouTube is labeled, “Ian Somerhalder being rude to fans,” that couldn’t be father from the truth. Ian actually placed one hand on the girl’s shoulder in an effort to comfort her, but his caring gesture made the situation worse. “Just one please, just one please,” the sobbing fan pressed, trying to guilt him into one. When Ian realized he wouldn’t be able to reason with anyone, he and his wife saw this as their cue to exit and go on with their day. “But you guys, don’t follow us please,” Ian begged, slightly frustrated by all the frenzy. “I love you guys. Do not follow us, okay? It’s too much, it’s too much.”

Witness his courteous interaction in the video below:

In all honesty, fang fans, should Ian have taken a few minutes to pose for photos with his fans? Or does he deserve the right to enjoy a personal day with zero interruptions? Are people blowing his simple request way out of proportion? Sound off in the comments!
